corrvin: a Courier daisy wheel text "definitely my type" (my type)
[personal profile] corrvin posting in [community profile] creativity
So I took a break from the camera case I've been sewing for myself and put together a cell phone case for my mom, to go in her purse and keep the phone within reach. I'm going to get a clasp for the loop at the store and mail it to her today.

I bought a couple of fat quarters at the Savage Quilter, the local quilt fabric place. They're near-ish to my house and have an awesome fabric selection, so I'll definitely be back. Their prices run about what I'd expect for an independent fabric store ($8-10 a yard for stuff you can't find at H*bby L*bby), so I can afford a couple of fat quarters when I feel like it.

I bought the blue patterned print because there are neat red birds on it; of course, there are 4 randomly on the fabric, so I had to fold and re-fold until I got the layout I wanted-- a simple pouch with a fold-down flap, and the bird on the flap.

I folded and ironed the fabric once I got what I wanted. This is the reverse, but you can see the bird on the center left. The top and bottom thirds will fold to the inside, then the rest will be folded into the shape I want.

I pinned all the edges in place including the top and bottom hems (the inside opening front and the edge of the flap) and added a bias-tape loop. It seemed a little thin, so I wanted to add a lining.

I cut a 4" by 14" strip of the red fabric, folded the edges under, and pinned it on what will be the inside of the case.

By the way, the best thing I ever thought of for pins? My pins are in a reusable plastic cup with a screw-on lid-- and a magnet under the cup. Even Rosie the naughty kitten can't spill them (and she has tried). (EDIT: Here's a picture! Even with the top off, the pins wouldn't spill in this position. As you can see.)

So, it's finished, and I probably need to work on my straight stitching more, but it looks good enough for me. The case will hold my phone, my iPod, or my camera (obviously not shown).

I still really like the bird. Maybe I'll do some beadwork on it before I send it off.
